Which departments do large companies have? What are these departments responsible for?

A company can have different departments with different functions.

The production department is responsible for manufacturing and packaging the goods. Its tasks also involve quality control. In large manufacturing companies, production takes place at an assembly line.

The Sales Department keeps contact with the regular customers and is responsible for the Sales Representatives, who distribute the company’s goods. It deals with taking and processing orders and contacting potential retailers.

Marketing is in charge of promoting the products and informing the customers about the products. It deals mainly with outlining advertising campaigns. This involves designing posters and leaflets, outlining commercials and also participating in trade fairs.

The Logistics Department is responsible for arranging the shipping. Its tasks also involve ordering raw materials and keeping records of the stock.

Public Relations has to keep the contact between the company and the public in the form of press releases or press conferences. These press releases can inform the public about the working environment, about the applied technologies or about any charity or sponsorship events.

The Finance Department is in charge of checking the invoices. In addition, it also monitors the income and the expenses. This department prepares the balance sheets and does the accounting.

Human Resources – also called Personnel Department – has to deal with the workforce of the company: it recruits new employees, it deals with the training of the staff and it arranges the dismissals at the company. Besides, this department is involved in settling personal problems of the staff.

The task of the Information Technology (IT) Department is to maintain the network and the computers at the company. It also deals with updating the necessary software. In addition, the IT personnel is in charge of the Intranet and telecommunication devices.

Research and Development focuses on testing new products and developing existing ones.

The Customer Service Department is involved in providing after-sales –service. This means it has to deal with customers’ complaints. Its employees, who work in call-centres, have to give advice to customers if they have any questions in connection with the products.

What tasks does a manager have?

The General Manager ‘s main task is to take full responsibility for the operation of the company. He or she is also responsible for making decisions. Managers have to delegate work – they should know, which subordinate is the right person for a task. The GM has to represent the company and has to take part in negotiations.

What makes a good manager?

A good manager is competent – he has some experience in the activity which the company is involved in. A good manager is understanding has got some empathy towards the problems of the subordinates. He has very good problem solving skills and is very determined. As for the skills, managers need to have good leadership skills, people skills and communication skills.

Vannak olyan szituációs feladatok, melyekben egy új alkalmazottadnak kell elmondanod, hogy milyen feladatai lesznek a Te osztályodon. Ehhez feltétlenül ismerned kell, hogy például a pénzügyi vagy a marketing osztály mivel foglalkozik. Vagy egy állásinterjút kell eljátszanod, amiben meg van adva, hogy Te 10 évig dolgoztál az értékesítési osztályon. Ha tudod, mit csinál ez az osztály, nem okoz majd gondot elmondani, hogy milyen feladataid voltak abban a 10 évben.
